The men on the Beacon House’s running team – in partnership with Strides In Recovery – completed their first half marathon on Saturday, May 8, along with Beacon House alumni, members of the Skid Row Running Club, and the Strides In Recovery running teams from Fred Brown Recovery Services and House of Hope. This was the first in-person and virtual Running Event for Strides In Recovery, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals overcome addiction through goal-oriented group running and walking groups.

Starting in the Lunada Bay neighborhood of Palos Verdes, members of the Skid Row Running Club ran the half marathon course alongside the men of Beacon House. For the last 5 miles of the race, residents of Fred Brown Recovery Services and the House of Hope joined in on the run, ending in front of the Beacon House’s facilities in San Pedro. Runners from around the nation joined virtually in support of the event, and supporters shared messages of support on social media.

Led by their Strides in Recovery coaches who ran with their teams, participants in the Strides In Recovery program use non-competitive training to reinforce the life skills and mindset needed to sustain long term sobriety. The experience of training builds camaraderie and a sense of belonging, enhances self-confidence and self-esteem, and teaches commitment, accountability, perseverance, and self-discipline, all essential components of their recovery treatment.

“There was so much camaraderie and positive energy as these recovery communities came together to achieve a challenging goal,” stated Leslie Gold, running coach and Founder of Strides In Recovery. “It was a heartwarming celebration of sobriety.”

“Running has been central to my own recovery, so it was inspiring to run alongside my Beacon House brothers and so many other men and women who have now embraced running as part of their recovery,” shared Archie Hoggan, Director of Relationships for the Beacon House and a 2018 graduate. “Strides In Recovery truly captured what the recovery community is all about with this event – supporting and cheering each other on as we navigate recovery together, one day at a time.”
